Why Choose HDPE or PET? A Startup’s Guide to Selecting the Perfect Plastic

When launching a new personal care, hair care, or cosmetic line, choosing the right material for your packaging is just as critical as formulating what goes inside it. The two most popular workhorses of the plastic packaging industry are PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)—including their recycled counterparts, rPET and rHDPE.

While both materials offer exceptional durability and sustainability, they have vastly different physical properties, chemical resistances, and visual appeals. Here is a technical yet practical guide to help you decide which material makes the best choice for your product range.

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): High Clarity & Premium Appeal

PET is instantly recognisable by its glass-like transparency and smooth, glossy finish. If showcasing the rich colour or clarity of your liquid formula is key to your branding, PET is usually the frontrunner.

  • Visual & Physical Traits: Crystal-clear clarity, lightweight, highly rigid, and shatterproof. It provides an excellent moisture barrier and holds its shape exceptionally well under pressure.
  • Best Suited For: Shampoos, body washes, bath gels, clear serums, hand cleansers, and spray formulations where visual shelf appeal is vital.
  • Chemical Profile: Highly resistant to diluted acids, oils, and alcohols.
  • Crucial Consideration: While PET handles most standard water-based formulas with ease, high concentrations of aggressive essential oils or active botanicals can cause PET to become brittle or crack over time.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Durability & Robust Protection

HDPE is famous for its milky, translucent, or solid opaque appearance. It feels softer to the touch than PET and offers greater flexibility, making it the ideal choice for squeeze bottles.

  • Visual & Physical Traits: Translucent or fully opaque (available in custom colours), semi-rigid, highly impact-resistant, and flexible.
  • Best Suited For: Rich body lotions, heavy conditioners, hair masks, squeezable creams, household cleaners, and formulas requiring protection from UV light.
  • Chemical Profile: Exceptionally resistant to a wide variety of harsher ingredients, acids, and alkalis.
  • Crucial Consideration: It is a common misconception that HDPE is completely immune to chemical reactions. HDPE—and particularly rHDPE (recycled HDPE)—is highly prone to environmental stress cracking when exposed to certain active chemicals, heavy surfactants, or concentrated essential oils, even more so than PET.

Feature PET (rPET) HDPE (rHDPE)
Appearance Glass-like clarity, high gloss Translucent or solid opaque
Flexibility Rigid / Firm Semi-rigid / Squeezable
Moisture Barrier Excellent Superior
Best For Formulas Water-based, serums, gels, shampoos Lotions, thick creams, active washes
Stress Cracking Risk Susceptible to strong essential oils High with surfactants & active oils

What Makes a Good Choice for Your Brand?

To select the right material, ask yourself three core questions during your prototyping phase:

Does your customer need to squeeze the bottle?

If your product is a thick lotion or conditioner, HDPE’s natural flexibility makes dispensing easy for the user. If it’s a pump-dispensed liquid or fine mist spray, PET’s rigid structure works brilliantly.

Does your product need protection from light?

If your formulation contains light-sensitive active ingredients, an opaque HDPE bottle will block light degradation better than a clear PET container.

Have you tested for Environmental Stress Cracking?

Never assume a formula is safe based on general guidelines. Active botanicals, heavy fragrances, and specific surfactants can react unpredictably over time.

De-Risk Your Launch: Test Before You Order

The only way to guarantee whether PET or HDPE is the best choice for your specific formulation is to test physical components under real-world conditions.

  • Request a Sample: Use the "Request a Sample" button on any of our product pages to order individual rPET and rHDPE containers to prototype with.
  • Run a Stability Test: Fill your sample bottles with your final formula and place them in a warm environment (40°C) for 4 to 12 weeks to monitor for panelling, discolouration, or stress cracking.
  • Consult Your Formulator: Ideally, your contract manufacturer should perform these stability tests for you. If they are unable to, the team at Ant Packaging can step in to assist you with testing protocols.
