When you are launching a startup in the personal care, hair care, or cosmetics industry, your liquid formula is your most valuable asset. However, even the most innovative formulation can fail if it reacts poorly with its packaging.
Product-packaging compatibility refers to how your liquid formula interacts over time with the specific plastic container holding it. To prevent costly product recalls, discolouration, or damaged packaging, rigorous compatibility testing is a non-negotiable step before launching into production.
Here is what you need to know about testing your formulas against different plastics to ensure a safe, stable shelf life.
The Role of Plastic Types: PET vs. HDPE
Different formulas require different types of plastic barriers. At Ant Packaging, we primarily manufacture using two highly recyclable, industry-standard materials, each with unique chemical resistances:
- PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Known for its glass-like clarity, high rigid strength, and excellent moisture barrier. It is brilliant for showcasing the natural colour of your products. It is highly resistant to diluted acids, oils, and alcohols, making it ideal for most shampoos, body washes, and water-based serums. However, certain strong essential oils or active chemicals can cause PET to crack or become brittle over time.
- HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Recognisable by its translucent or opaque appearance. HDPE is incredibly robust and offers exceptional chemical resistance to a wide variety of harsher ingredients, acids, and alkalis. However, it is important to note that HDPE—and particularly rHDPE (recycled HDPE)—is highly prone to environmental stress cracking when exposed to certain active chemicals, surfactants, or concentrated essential oils, even more so than PET. If your formula contains highly active botanical extracts, chemical exfoliants, or heavy oils, rigorous compatibility testing is essential to ensure the container maintains its structural integrity.
What Can Go Wrong Without Testing?
Chemical incompatibility isn't always immediate; it often develops over weeks or months on a retail shelf. Without testing, you risk encountering several common issues:
- Panelling: This occurs when the liquid formula absorbs oxygen from inside the bottle or reacts with the plastic, causing the atmospheric pressure inside to drop. The walls of the bottle will literally suck inward, distorting the packaging.
- Discolouration and Oxidation: Chemical reactions can cause your beautifully fragranced lotion or clear serum to turn yellow, brown, or cloudy, rendering it unsellable.
- Fragrance Loss or Migration: Certain plastics allow volatile organic compounds (like artificial fragrances or essential oils) to slowly escape through the microscopic structure of the plastic, leaving your product scentless over time.
- Stress Cracking: The plastic itself can degrade, leading to microscopic fractures around the neck or base, eventually resulting in messy leaks.
How to Conduct a Basic Stability Test
As an early-stage startup, you can initiate preliminary stability and compatibility testing yourself before committing to large manufacturing runs:
- Request Specific Samples: Use our "Order Sample" button to secure the exact PET or HDPE bottles you plan to use.
- Fill and Weight Check: Fill several sample bottles with your exact final formula. Weigh each bottle precisely and note the baseline weight down to the gram.
- The Environment Test: Place your filled samples into different environments to simulate an accelerated shelf life:
- One in a dark, room-temperature cupboard (the control sample).
- One in a warm environment (e.g., a professional laboratory incubator or a consistently warm room at around 40°C) to accelerate any potential chemical reactions.
- Monitor Regularly: Check the bottles weekly for 4 to 12 weeks. Look closely for signs of panelling, changes in the liquid's colour or scent, weight loss (which indicates evaporation), or cracking in the plastic.
